Robert Nurisio

Robert was first introduced to Vision Therapy as a Sports Vision patient in 1999,by Dr. Carole Hong, while pursuing a career in Professional Golf. In the years since,Robert hasworked as a Vision Therapist in San Diego, Houston, Austin, andChattanooga. Along the way,Robert has had the privilege to work for and learn fromsome of the greats in Developmental Optometry. Besides Robert’s work with directpatient care, he has coordinated numerous seminars for Behavioral Optometristsworldwide, served as the Program Chair for the Wold Vision Therapists Forum, servedfor two years as National President of P.A.V.E. (Parents Active for Vision Education),completed several courses on Childhood Visual and PerceptualDevelopment as well asthe Visual Impacts of Traumatic Brain Injuries, coordinated and participated in manyvision therapy study groups, and most recently completed a three year term as theChair of the Vision Therapist Mentor Committee. Currently, Robert is the owner andprimary contributor to the “VTWorks” blog, which has been in existence since 2012 andhas over 700 followers from the VT community. Originally from San Francisco,California, Robert is excited to be home working in Northern California again afterspending 18 years living, working, and learning in other parts of the country. Robert hastwo children, a daughter in college and a son in high school.


A therapist-centric workshop with hands on learning! In this comprehensive course with Robert Nurisio you will learn his approach to VT including how to encourage thinking by your patient as well as the value of staying present.  Key elements of binocular vision as well as essential tools in VT (lenses & prisms) will be reviewed. The importance of movement and how to stack activities to maximize benefits will be taught.  More than half of the session will be dedicated to practice, role play and demonstration.  You will not want to miss this opportunity!

Course Outline in Detail:

A. Introductions and Intentions

– have everyone consider and write out their intentions/goals for the weekend. Why are they here? What do they hope to gain? Would like some to share publicly.

B. Discuss My Approach to VT

a. Goals are key

b. Thinking is primary

c. Activities are secondary

d. Value of staying present with the patient

C. Key Elements of VT All Vision Therapists Should Know

a. Oculomotor (Fixations/Pursuits/Saccades)

b. Accommodation – lenses vs. real space

c. Vergence – virtual space vs. real space

d. Binocularity – Anti-Suppression, First Degree Fusion, Second Degree Fusion,Third Degree Fusion

e. Strabismus – understanding how to approach this DX and what to expect

f. Amblyopia – strabismic vs. refractive – how to approach each

D. Using Lenses and Prisms

a. Understanding accommodative demand

b. Understanding different ways to prism and spatial shifts in VT (opposing, yoked,fusional)

E. Importance of Body Movement (this will be a judgement call as to how far into this we travel depending on time

F. Stacking Activities to Maximize Benefits


b. Tracking/Saccades through minus/plus

c. Others?

G. Demonstration – encourage participants to bring a favourite activity to review with the group. Ideally, a volunteer will act as the ‘patient’ and the “activity owner” will work through the given activity with the volunteer. Discussion will be moderated as to which observations are present, how to adjust in the moment, as well as long term planning as to how the activity might be loaded/unloaded.In terms of time management, the first six hours will be dedicated to sections A-F, while the remainder of the time will be spent on demonstration.
